Wooooo hoooo,
well it must be some sort of holy week.
Last night there was yet another party at the local church which lie's about 100 metre's from my room.(three nights running)
Once again there was the 10 piece jiviing salsa band.
Turns out to be the same band at every gig in town.The guys are machine's.They played for four hours at the soccer then rested for 2,and continued to play a solid 5 hours that night at the church.They do change their costume tho,from a all matching black slacks and yellow shirt to a black slacks and moran shirt,impressive stuff.Unfortunatly they don't change their songs as much so after a good 12 hours over the last three days of the same salsa band i surely have had my fill.
Now the absolute highlight of the night (and my week) was not the fact there was a crazy party going for the second night running outside the church, while people prayed mind you.But instead it was the insane fireworks show that followed
Now this town has no cops,and definatly no fire brigade.The house's are mostly built from bamboo and thatched roof's froom palm tree leave's.Everything is brow,its 25 degree's at night and everything is dry.
The fireworks were'nt big or expensive,rather just a shoddy,cheap,dangerous and lunical show of fire and the unknown.
It started with a fat pyromanic of an equadorian setting of huge shooters into the sky,RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CROWD,people flurried so quickly,the initial sound nearly burst my other eardrum.Big shooters lit up the sky and did'nt make it high enough,they were coming back down on people and two roof's got frazzled.This was much to the crowd's delight.Rather than been concerned for safety of others and house's every person there,including myself was in hysterical laughter.
Anyway,next was a plaster cow that a guy wore on his back,complete with loads of fireworks attached.The band played a bullrunning song and off he went through the crowd,alight cracking challenging anyone to a dual.Of course the crowd split and ran for their safety anywhere he went.There were crackers falling off and flying into the crowd,one hit the church,one went into the live band and many buzzed through the feet of the crowd hitting and bouncing off people's leg's.It was chaotic,people dancing but everyone was pumped,laughing so hard and hooting at other's misfortunate crowd placement.
This was the funniest,craziest and most dangerous shit i had seen,it would be like giving a 4 year old a lighter and a box of crackers in a shopping center and then saying "go get em son",
but the best was the crowds response,that itself was like 350 4 year olds in hysterics at their teacher weting his\her pants in front of the school.No rules in this town,no idea either.
But more was to come,the finalie.They lit up the big construction of spinning wheels.At the start a dog was barking and trying to attack the cracker's,until it would get burnt,scurry for 10 seconds then head back for more.Priceless entertainment.Also again shit was flying uncontrolibly through the crowd creating more excitement.
Secretly the guys in charge while everyone was focused on the monument.Lit up the hellish crazy,fire shooters amongst the crowd and 5 metres from where i stood.
I heard them then saw people running as if it was a war.These big shooters were golden in color and shot comletly randomly,all directions with such speed and brightness they looked like a missile.I stuck it out close until one went of in the box,loud scary and debris landed on my shoulder and burnt my shirt a little.
It was so completly fucking crazy this show, one of the funnest and funniEST things i've ever seen.No control,no safety measurment whatsoever yet no injuries or trouble at all.(apart from a few sore ears).
At the end of it all the crowd was filled with such joy,dancing around,scared and mostly laughing incontrollibly,people were so happy.I was really happy also and amzed by the lack of casualtie's.
Then, cue in, THE LIVE SALSA BAND.
What a party,and all at a catholic church,im joining up.
So this is montanita,a wonderfull frienly,goodvibe's village,on the coast of Equador.Its a non stop party everyday,beautiful girls,surfer guys for all you chicks and there is also really good surf here and around.
Not to mention the amazing sea food.Get here-Montanita.
