MENTAWAI'S 08
well it's been another year since leaving the shores of oz and once again it was off to indonesia on a surf safari.
This time it was north western indo to the mentawai islands wich lay off the coast of Sumatra.
first night was an experience with a shitty 12 hour ferry ride that turned into a 24 hour disastrous throw up competition, then we hit land briefly for a feed a sleep and then another small boat around the island to katiet (ht's).
although even this boat did'nt make it all the way as the captain (kid) was to soft to head into rough ocean, thus leaving us to decide we will walk and he can bring our gear around later.
This is the first photo, our walk to ht's along beautiful beach.
Once spotting the heaving shallow scary intense yet perfect looking right hander known as ht's all our 3 days effort of travel to get to this spot was soon put in the brain garbage bin and left forever.
over the next 12 days our typical day consisted of surf, looking at the surf, talking about the surf, having another surf, and when there was no daylight left to look at the surf some more we would take it in turns (of mostly two persons) to cook up a batch of food for the clan.
Now the clan consisted of Aaron (my brother) Faz (mate from adelaide) Me-that wa the visitors.
and Ben and Rebecca Pike,Brock Larson (all freinds from torquay area who have lived and surfed here for near 2 years) and rebecca's sister racheal who was visiting from australia also.
so our feeds were the same shit every night as we got our groceries delivered from accross the island once a week,no meat, same vegies every meal, just the choice of eating it with rice or noodles. Not that it mattered out there cos anything was something as long as it gave you energy to get through the days all was good.
The set up was all 7 of us sharing one local hut,we fitted in with az on the porch but brocky opted for the front been the gentlemen he is.As you can tell there was'nt much luxury, sleep on the ground in your mozzie nets and hope you dont contract malaria, pretty much back to basics, just the way we all liked it luckily.
The waves, well fucking heavy i thought, but so beautiful, warm and typical indo perfection.i could go on all day about the waves but ill leave it for a face to face.
Anyway,it was an amazing trip, experience, the waves great and the company great (except for having an older brother there been "an older brother"),but yeah, one hell of a trip, can't wait to go back.
Who's coming?
